I've been working with energy transition researchers for over seven years now. One day I asked myself a simple question: can I tell this story to kids too? As a mom, I read stacks of books with my child every day yet I couldn't find a single book that told the whole story of renewable energy, from history to future to the social science side of it all.
When it comes to RES I’m asking myself: where are we headed? What do we already know, and what is still possible? The innovations still to come, the breakthroughs already on their way, those stories are rarely told to the people who need them most: today's children, who will build tomorrow's world.
My own childhood in Poland definitely played a role in choosing this topic. The city where I was born, Zabrze, had a rich coal history and was completely reinventing itself while I grew up. Nowadays I can see the wind turbines from my kitchen window in Kortrijk.
I believe design can make this planet a better place. A clearer dashboard means a better diagnosis. A carefully designed report means a better-informed decision. And a carefully put-together children's book means a child starts seeing the world a bit broader and maybe believes they can improve it themselves.
Writing for children taught me to strip things down to what really matters. I had to let go of complexity and trust that simple words carry more weight than we think. Research became storytelling, and storytelling became something I hope will spark curiosity in young readers about where their energy comes from.
